The Sri Lankan Civil War, which lasted from 1983 to 2009, was a brutal and protracted conflict characterized by significant human rights abuses and loss of life on both sides. The LTTE, known for its tactics of suicide bombings and guerrilla warfare, sought to establish an independent Tamil state in the north and east of the country. However, in 2009, the Sri Lankan military launched a major offensive that effectively crushed the LTTE, leading to the end of the civil war.
Despite the military defeat of the LTTE, the underlying political and social issues that gave rise to the demand for Tamil Eelam have not been fully resolved. Calls for justice, reconciliation, and political autonomy for the Tamil minority continue to be significant issues in Sri Lankan politics.
